Fancy holidaying in one of the merriest places in the world? The Finnish town of Tampere combines a city break with sauna tradition and breathtaking scenery

So why will heading to Finland lift our mood?

In the 2024 World Happiness Report – and for the seventh year in a row – Finland was named the happiest country in the world. Based on a three-year average of each population’s assessment of their quality of life, the Finns attribute their contentedness to being surrounded by nature, having a sustainable and down-to-earth approach to life, and eating food made with fresh ingredients.

What’s so special about Tampere?

It’s a great all-rounder, whether you’re into culture, delicious food or thrilling outdoor adventures. It’s also known as the sauna capital of the world.

We’re definitely feeling relaxed already…

There are almost 60 public saunas in the city and the surrounding region, preserving the unique Finnish sauna tradition. As well as being a good way to escape the cold, sauna bathing can be great for easing stress and improving circulation.

How about some outdoor fun?

The city is nestled between Lake Näsijärvi and Lake Pyhä­järvi, so you can mix sightseeing with lake cruises, outdoor swimming, kayaking or fishing trips. There are also some superb public beaches. Tampere has over 150 lakes inside the city boundaries, and on almost every one there’s a beach or place to swim in.

We’ve definitely worked up an appetite now.

Tampere Market Hall, the largest market hall in the Nordics, offers a delightful experience with local delicacies, pastries, cheese, and more. There are also a number of restaurant options, including hot wing restaurant Siipiweräjä, Umami sushi bar, Kotilounas for traditional Finnish fare and La Marée for fresh seafood.

Where should we rest our heads?
