SW Reviews: The Hideaway Experience, Auchterhouse
Tracey McNellan experiences a wellness stay offering spectacular views and complete relaxation

Some places impress you and others genuinely change how you feel. The Hideaway Experience, just outside Dundee, very firmly falls into the latter camp for me.

I was invited to visit at one of the most hectic times of year – the week before Christmas – when life felt loud, my diary was overflowing, and switching off seemed almost impossible. And yet, within minutes of arriving, I could feel the tension melt away. It’s really easy to find, and once you’re there, the outside world simply disappears. I felt completely cocooned – calm, cosy, and utterly removed from everyday life.

The Hideaway Experience has quietly perfected this formula since 2005, welcoming more than 15,000 guests to what founders Caroline and Ross Millar describe as “a penthouse suite in a barley field.” And honestly? That’s exactly what it felt like. These aren’t cabins. Each Hideaway is a spacious, 80-square-metre, adults-only retreat – modern, beautifully designed, and effortlessly luxurious. The venue’s clean lines, generous proportions, and general layout make doing absolutely nothing feel like a perfectly valid choice.

The views are spectacular. From the glass frontage of every room, you’re treated to sweeping panoramas of the Sidlaw Hills. Whether you’re wrapped up on the deck or lounging inside, it’s impossible not to pause and just breathe it all in. The landscape becomes part of the experience – a calming, ever-present backdrop to complete relaxation.

The little details really made me smile. On arrival, thoughtfully curated food parcels were waiting, but opening the fridge stopped me in my tracks – there were wellness juices, fresh fruit, and gorgeous local produce ready to enjoy. It felt indulgent, considered, and entirely generous – the kind of attention to detail that makes a stay feel special.

And then there’s the outdoor space. Wow. In summer, the deck will be stunning, but even in winter it’s a showstopper. During my stay, I had a massage in the comfort of my Hideaway, then relaxed in the sauna, hot tub, and even braved the ice bath. You can book a personal trainer, too, but I just wanted to switch off completely – and every element is designed to make that effortless.

For winter wellness, the Hideaway offers ice baths, fireside recovery, farm-based PT sessions, and in-Hideaway massages. Mornings start with a breakfast hamper curated from local producers — the perfect combination of indulgence and wellbeing.

I arrived exhausted and overstimulated. I left lighter, calmer, and already dreaming of my next visit. A private, calm, indulgent escape done properly – exactly the kind of luxury I needed.
