Tracey McNellan returns to historic Stobo Castle — and finds a spa sanctuary that feels as restorative as ever

It had been almost ten years since my last visit to Stobo Castle, and as I turned into the long, sweeping drive, I was immediately reminded why this place leaves such a lasting impression. Set within 1,000 acres of beautiful Scottish Borders countryside, the location alone feels hugely restorative: rolling lawns, ancient trees and wide, open skies create a sense of escape before you even step inside.

Stobo feels exactly as I remembered it, yet subtly evolved. The baronial architecture still brings a sense of occasion, but the atmosphere is softer and more refined. The interiors blend historic character with calming neutrals, elegant furnishings and gentle lighting, creating a space that feels quietly luxurious rather than imposing. It’s a place that encourages you to slow down almost instinctively.

I stayed in the Cashmere Suite, and it was wonderful. The suite strikes the perfect balance between sheer indulgence and comfort – spacious, beautifully considered and effortlessly calming. The bathroom is particularly luxe: a serene retreat in its own right, where time seems to stretch. With its own private terrace overlooking the grounds, the suite feels wonderfully secluded, offering uninterrupted views across the surrounding countryside. We could easily have dined in the suite, cocooned in comfort and glamour, but chose instead to head to the restaurant.

Dining at Stobo is an experience that never dates. The restaurant remains elegant and reassuringly unchanged, a space that feels steeped in history yet entirely relevant. This is historic luxe at its best – refined, timeless and confident. The menu champions seasonal Scottish produce and is beautifully executed, while the service is warm, attentive and instinctively discreet.

The spa remains at the heart of Stobo and is as restorative as ever. From the outdoor hydro pool – with steam rising into the crisp Borders air – to the thermal suites and relaxation spaces, everything flows seamlessly. Treatments are delivered with care and expertise, which left me feeling genuinely restored rather than fleetingly pampered.

Stobo Castle is still the place I remembered, but it has grown up beautifully. Its setting remains breathtaking, its luxury understated and assured. I left feeling calm, grounded and quietly impressed that something so familiar could still feel so wonderfully special.
